Martha's Who?

Nestled within the weathered bricks of a turn-of-the-century building, and sharing a quaint street corner with an old car repair shop, lies an establishment steeped in profound history—Martha’s Vineyard. What began as a modest bar, ignited by the visionary spirit of Jim House, creator of The Glo Center, has creatively morphed into the cultural touchstone it is today.

Under the discerning eye of Rodney Tucker in 1994, the bar underwent its first metamorphosis, adopting the name Martha’s Vineyard in homage to Tucker’s mother and her affinity for lighthouses—a fitting beacon for the burgeoning community that would assemble there. The original space, affectionately known to our current regulars as the “middle bar,” would soon sprawl outward, as opportunity knocked with the neighboring car repair shop’s space in 1999, paving the way for the dynamic “mainstage/dance side” that pulses with energy today.

Martha’s Vineyard grew into a sanctuary: a jubilant, welcoming haven for the LGBTQIA+ community. Its walls expanded yet again, birthing The Light House Lounge, and later transforming into what patrons today recognize as the cozy Cellar Lounge.

The year 2008 marked a pivotal new chapter when Martha’s transitioned under new ownership. In sync with the tides of change, Martha’s Vineyard evolved, mirroring the world’s growing embracement of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The venue quickly became synonymous with legendary drag performers, captivating weekly drag shows, and extravagant, heart-stirring celebrations—a testament to its legacy of inclusivity and transformation.

Fast-forward to 2023, and the keys to Martha’s storied legacy passed into the hands of Weston Donham—an individual whose dedication to Martha’s Vineyard since 2018 has been nothing short of remarkable. With fresh aspirations, a visionary perspective, and Donham at the helm, Martha’s Vineyard stands on the threshold of a thrilling new era.

Today, Martha’s champions itself one of the premier homes for LIVE entertainment in Downtown Springfield. We continue to focus on providing a safe place for all of our patrons to celebrate their many special occassions at a standard of entertainment that simply cannot be beat. Martha’s unequivocal position as the #1 party destination is reflected in the vibrant weekly lineups of varied entertainment including karaoke nights, latin nights, movie nights, drag shows, special events, and themed parties.

Our rich history of drag entertainers has not diminished either in our, almost, 30 years of operation. We are honored to have been host to incredible worldwide talents including Sasha Colby, Anetra, Roxxxy Andrews, Loosey LaDuca, Coco Montrese, Widow Vondu, Landon Cider, and Heidi N Closet among many, many more!

Over the last few years, Martha’s has updated the structure of its expanding facility, implemented new security measures and equipment, and continued to evolve their entertainment offerings by welcoming live vocal artists, burlesque performers, and dance groups. Martha’s has remained, and will continue to be,  dedicated to the mission of interweaving inclusivity with celebartions of all sorts in the growing downtown area.
